Piapot Family Shelter Inc. is seeking a registered Indigenous Child Therapist to provide trauma-informed, culturally grounded therapeutic services to children and youth accessing shelter services.
Located on Piapot First Nation, Piapot Family Shelter Inc. is a newly established emergency shelter providing a safe, supportive, trauma-informed, and culturally grounded environment for individuals and families experiencing violence.
About the Opportunity
The Indigenous Child Therapist will provide trauma-informed, culturally grounded therapeutic services to children and youth who have witnessed or experienced violence and trauma.
The successful candidate will be knowledgeable in both clinical therapeutic approaches and Indigenous cultural and land-based approaches to healing and wellness. Working collaboratively with children and families, shelter staff, Elders, and community service providers, the therapist will support healing, resilience, and emotional wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide age-appropriate counselling and therapeutic support to children and youth.
- Conduct assessments and develop individualized treatment and wellness plans.
- Use trauma-informed, child-centred, culturally grounded, and land-based therapeutic approaches.
- Provide crisis intervention and therapeutic support related to trauma, grief, family violence, anxiety, behavioural concerns, and other emotional challenges.
- Collaborate with parents and caregivers, shelter staff, Elders, cultural supports, and external service providers.
- Coordinate referrals to appropriate health, mental health, education, child and family, and community services.
- Maintain accurate and confidential case notes, assessments, treatment plans, and required documentation.
- Participate in case consultations and multidisciplinary planning as required.
- Provide guidance to staff and families on childhood trauma and mental wellness.
- Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, Indigenous Social Work, Child and Youth Care, or a related field.
- Current registration and good standing with the appropriate professional regulatory body or association.
- Experience providing therapeutic services to children who have witnessed or experienced violence and trauma.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed, child-centred clinical therapeutic approaches and Indigenous cultural and land-based approaches.
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, protocols, and ways of knowing.
- Strong assessment, crisis intervention, communication, relationship-building, and documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Knowledge of Cree language, culture, and traditions is considered an asset.
- Valid driver’s licence, reliable vehicle, and ability to travel to Piapot First Nation.
- Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check required.
Contract & Compensation
- Contract position with flexible, as-needed hours.
- Up to 320 hours of service to be completed by April 30, 2027.
- Professional designation hourly rates will apply.
- Contract may be renewed after April 30, 2027.
