Piapot Family Shelter Inc. is seeking a knowledgeable, compassionate, and community-focused professional to join our founding team as a Cultural Coordinator.
Located on Piapot First Nation, Piapot Family Shelter Inc. is a newly established emergency shelter that provides a safe, supportive, trauma-informed, and culturally grounded environment for individuals and families experiencing violence.
The shelter is committed to promoting safety, healing, empowerment, cultural connection, and long-term wellbeing. Through individualized support, meaningful programming, community partnerships, and culturally responsive services, the shelter works alongside residents as they move toward safety, stability, healing, and self-determination.
Culture, identity, belonging, and connection are foundational elements of healing. As a member of the founding shelter team, the Cultural Coordinator will play a critical role in supporting individuals and families to reconnect with culture, strengthen cultural identity, access traditional teachings, and build meaningful relationships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members.

Position Summary
The Cultural Coordinator is responsible for the development, coordination, and delivery of cultural supports, activities, and programming for individuals and families accessing services through Piapot Family Shelter Inc.
Working within a trauma-informed, culturally grounded, and strengths-based framework, the Cultural Coordinator creates opportunities for cultural connection, healing, identity development, and community belonging. The position provides both individual and group-based cultural supports and works closely with residents to identify cultural interests, strengths, and goals.
The Cultural Coordinator facilitates access to traditional teachings, ceremonies, cultural activities, land-based learning opportunities, and connections with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members. Through these activities, the position supports individuals and families in strengthening cultural identity, building resilience, and supporting their healing journey.
The Cultural Coordinator works collaboratively with the Executive Director, Support Workers, Group Program Coordinator, Children’s Coordinator, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community partners to ensure cultural supports are integrated throughout shelter programming and operations.
Key Responsibilities
Individual Cultural Support
- Meet with residents to identify cultural interests, strengths, and goals.
- Provide one-on-one cultural support, encouragement, and mentorship.
- Assist residents in accessing cultural teachings, ceremonies, and community resources.
- Support residents in reconnecting with culture, language, community, and traditional practices.
- Provide advocacy and support when cultural needs have been identified.
- Encourage participation in cultural activities and opportunities.
Cultural Programming and Activities
- Develop, coordinate, and facilitate cultural programming for adults, youth, and children.
- Coordinate cultural workshops, teachings, seasonal activities, and special events.
- Facilitate opportunities for cultural learning and skill development.
- Organize land-based learning opportunities and community cultural activities where appropriate.
- Support the inclusion of cultural components within shelter programming and special events.
- Adapt activities to meet the diverse needs and abilities of participants.
Elder and Knowledge Keeper Engagement
- Build and maintain relationships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, cultural teachers, and community members.
- Coordinate Elder involvement in shelter activities and programming.
- Arrange honoraria, scheduling, transportation, and logistical supports for cultural activities.
- Ensure Elders and Knowledge Keepers are welcomed and appropriately supported.
- Facilitate respectful and meaningful engagement between residents and cultural supports.
Community Engagement and Partnerships
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with community organizations and cultural partners.
- Identify opportunities for collaborative cultural initiatives and programming.
- Promote community participation and cultural engagement opportunities.
- Support residents in building connections within the broader community.
Cultural Safety and Organizational Support
- Promote cultural safety, respect, and inclusion throughout the shelter.
- Support staff in incorporating culturally respectful approaches into service delivery.
- Assist in identifying opportunities to strengthen cultural responsiveness within the organization.
- Contribute to organizational initiatives related to Truth and Reconciliation.
- Support the development and implementation of cultural policies, practices, and protocols.
Documentation, Reporting, and Evaluation
- Maintain records of cultural activities and participation.
- Track program attendance, engagement, and outcomes.
- Prepare monthly summaries and reports related to cultural programming and supports.
- Contribute information required for organizational reporting and funder requirements.
- Assist in evaluating program effectiveness and identifying opportunities for improvement.
Collaboration and Teamwork
- Work collaboratively with all shelter staff to support resident wellbeing.
- Participate in team meetings, case consultations, supervision, and training opportunities.
- Support integrated service delivery and coordinated resident support.
- Contribute to a respectful, supportive, and collaborative workplace culture.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, teachings, ceremonies, and community practices.
- Experience working with Indigenous individuals, families, and communities.
- Experience facilitating cultural, educational, recreational, or community-based programming.
- Understanding of trauma-informed practice and the impacts of violence, colonization, and intergenerational trauma.
- Experience working collaboratively with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community partners is considered an asset.
- Strong relationship-building, communication, and facilitation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence and reliable transportation.
- Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check required.
Employment Status
Full-Time Position
Work schedule will be determined in consultation with the successful applicant based on programming needs, Elder availability, community engagement opportunities, and operational requirements.
Compensation
Starting wage: $23.00–$25.00 per hour, based on qualifications and experience.
