Piapot First Nation (PFN) is located northeast of Regina, with a population of approximately nine hundred members on reserve. Piapot controls lands which are comprised of over 19,000 hectares located throughout Saskatchewan. With an abundance of community programs, we take pride in our Nation, ensuring we maintain our cultural and spiritual teachings, which are of utmost importance in our daily operations.

Job Summary: 

Under the direct supervision of the Health Director, the Mental Health and Wellness worker is responsible for the development and implementation of community-based addiction prevention, intervention and education programs to support Piapot community’s needs.  The position is jointly focused on community-based programming and client referral services.

Responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

  • Provide one-on-one counseling services to members of the community, either in office or by doing a home visit, in the areas of Alcohol, Drug, Solvent, Chemical, Gambling or other addictions through a well-defined client intake process;
  • Responsible for development and implementation of a work plan to support the community, including but not limited to prevention/education workshops, support group initiation, intervention, referral and aftercare programs;
  • Create outcomes and goals for each program that can be measured and reported on (how many attendees attended the workshops, support groups etc. help develop goals for members);
  • Responsible for establishing and facilitating recovery related self-help and support groups, their treatment programs by way of one-on-one counselling, case management and coordinating regular AA/NA/GA meetings;
  • Develop proposals and apply for grants to assist in the provision of programming when needed;
  • Facilitate and coordinate public awareness activities focused on combating drug and alcohol issues in the community;
  • Create a health resource library by providing current information on addictions and treatment options;
  • Responsible for client referrals to internal and external agencies based on client case plans that need to be created with members;
  • Responsible for pre-treatment admission counseling and the development of written aftercare plans;
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining a reporting system which includes client services provided, record of referrals, number of clients consults by type and maintain this system according to confidentiality principles;
  • Responsible for assisting the health team in the planning and coordination of community-based programs which promote healthy lifestyles;
  • Responsible for preparing reports, proposals, correspondence and other documents as directed;
  • Other duties as requested

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies:

  • Minimum grade 12.  Mental Health and Wellness certificate-diploma would be an asset.
  • Four (4) years’ experience in combined counselling and working with addictions;
  • Must be willing to travel and possess a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
  • Leadership qualities and live an addiction free lifestyle to promote and encourage positive living;
  • Must have a working understanding of the social and cultural issues within a First Nation community which affect parenting styles;
  • Ability to take direction, work well under minimum supervision and work flexible hours when needed;
  • Have a valid CPR/First Aid and Mental Health First Aid or is registered to attend course in CPR/First Aid and Mental Health First Aid Training.
  • Must possess a positive attitude, incentive to improve and be highly motivated;
  • Must demonstrate respectful communication skills and be able to communicate clearly in both spoken and written form.
  • Must be well organized, punctual, reliable and dependable;
  • Must be able to promote healthy lifestyle choices, and sound parenting/family values with an emphasis on traditional and cultural enrichment.
  • The ability to manage confidential information in a strict and reliable manner.
